Creating a Culture of Safety and Teamwork

Welcome to our blog post recapping the recent Subbies breakfast event we hosted, where we dove into the future within SCL, health & safety, as well as hosting esteemed guest speaker Gordon Walker to share his insights into Teamwork and his experiences as a long-time coach and mentor. This early morning gathering brought together industry professionals from a range of professions. Signature Construction’s CEO - Gareth Ready, Operations Manager - Michael Kluge, and Health and Safety Officer - Natalie Spray, spoke to important health and safety issues and aspects of our upcoming year.

Prioritising Health and Safety

Natalie Spray started the morning on the significance of prioritising health and safety. Working in an ever-changing environment, we must equip ourselves and our contracting partners with the necessary tools to navigate these challenges. Nat emphasised SCL’s commitment to the well-being and growth of our contracting partners, highlighting that their safety practices are important for their benefit, the people around them, and for the overall success of our collaborative projects.

Gordon Walker, Halberg Award Winner - Coach of the Decade 2010-2020, shared his insights into effective teamwork and his experiences as a coach of some of the most elite in the world. Drawing attention to diverse team dynamics, from sports teams to Kitchen personnel, Walker highlighted the fundamental role of collaboration in achieving success, wherever the setting. He emphasised that success relies on mutual support and the collective of individual skills and support systems toward a common goal.

Key Strategies for Effective Teamwork

Walker introduced various tools and models for optimising team performance, emphasising the importance of proactive problem-solving and continuous improvement. Essential to his approach were the "5 dysfunctions of a team," providing a framework for identifying and addressing obstacles and using them to your benefit. By asking critical questions and promoting open communication, teams can navigate challenges and capitalise on their collective strengths.

The Power of Teamwork

Our Subbies breakfast event highlighted the importance of prioritising health and safety, and teamwork within our industry. By embracing a collaborative mindset and implementing actionable strategies within every team, we can create a culture of excellence where every individual plays a vital role in achieving collective success. The TEAM within the TEAM, emphasises that collective efforts are greater than the sum of our parts, highlighting the strength and resilience of collaborative efforts.

Stay tuned for more insights and updates as we continue to prioritise the well-being and success of our teams.
